Join us for the opening of our new Women's History Month exhibit, "The Women Who Changed Athens," curated by Historic Athens fellow Anna Scott.
This March, we celebrate eight women who made history in the fields of medicine, education, journalism, and the arts: Judia Jackson Harris, Mary Jackson McCrorey, Mildred Seydell, Lucy Stanton, Minnie Davis, Mary Lyndon, Dr. Ida Mae Hiram, and Dr. Leila Denmark.

Opening Reception: The Women Who Changed Athens

Opening Reception for Emancipation to Integration: Black Education in Athens, Georgia

The Historic Athens Welcome Center invites the community to a free Opening Reception for its new exhibit Emancipation to Integration: Black Education in Athens, Georgia on Thursday, February 12th from 4:00-6:00 PM. The exhibit shares the remarkable stories of formerly enslaved people, local Black educators and students of the Reconstruction era, the first students and teachers to integrate Athens schools and the University of Georgia, and the legacy of Black education in Athens. During the reception, guests will meet the curators of the exhibit and are welcome to tour the c. 1820 Church-Waddel-Brumby House.

Holiday Open House at the Historic Athens Welcome Center

Tour Athens' oldest historic house and enjoy hot cider, cookies, toys and games of the early 1800s, and traditional holiday music at the Church-Waddel-Brumby house. This free event is a great way to learn about local history and get into the holiday spirit before attending the Athens Downtown Parade of Lights at 7:00 PM.
